Respected all,
I would like to complement what Sri Vishnu has written about bhakthi.
I have heard once from Sri Krishna Premi Swmigal what 'Bhakthi'
means.
Swami Nammalwar says 'Pathudai Adiyavark eliyavan'
(He is easily accesible to one who has attachment to Him'
Taking cue from this verse, we can derive that 'Attachment to Him'
is Bakhthi.
the attachment one has towards his wife is called as 'Love'
the attachment one has towards his son is called as 'Vatsalyam'
the attachment one has towards his friend is called as 'friendship'
Similarly, attachment to Lord is 'Bhakthi'
Remember the verse in Srimad BhagavatGita 'Maiyya saktha Mano
Partha'..
Lord here tells Sri Arjuna (Have 'Asakthi (attachment) towards me)
This is the same Lord who in previous verses says 'Do not have
Asakthi' on anything. (Our Poorvacharyas calls this as Tatva
Vachanam)
Let us see what 'Tatva Darisee vachanam'is. Swmai Nammalwar talk
about the same thing. earlier he says 'Veedu min murraum' (Leave all
your attachments), and later he says ''Pathudai Adiyavark eliyavan'.
hence we can conclude that "attachment towards Lord ' is Bhakthi.
Further, Emperumanar explains how this 'Attachment' shoule be..
He says 'Thaila dharavat Avichinna, Preethi poorvaka anusandanam
bakhthirit abijeeyathe'
Like an Oil would flow incessently, if one has atachment towards
Lord in the mode of 'love' that is Bakhthi... What a great
definition.
It is interesting to compare here what is the definition of Bakhthi
as given by Sankaracharya in Viveka Chudamani, he says
'Swasswaroopanu Sandanam bakhthirit abijeeyathe'
if one constantly relises that He is the supreme (Like Aham
Brahmasmi type ), that is Bakthi.
It is very clear that from whome Swami Emperumanar got his
definition right of Bakthi... It is from none other than Karimaran
Sadagopan.
Adiyen.
