Dear Bhagavatas:If Upakarma and Gaayatri japam have to be done on the same day, what is the sequence in which they have to done?
This is explained by Prakritam Azhagiya Singhar in his "SrivaishNava Sadacaara NirNayam" book (pages 82- 83 of Anubandam as follows:1. After Praatah Snaanam, do Sandhyaavandanam and other Nityakarma anushTaanams (like Moola mantra, Dvaya, Charama sloka japams)
2.Then, do KamOkaarsheet Japam 3.Then, do Gaayatri Japam4. Finally, do "Upaakarma" including "YagjnOPaveeta DhaaraNam" and "KhaaNDarishi TarpaNam" etc.in the "aparahnam" (i.e) midday.
He quotes 'Smriti vachanam" in support of this sequence: "Upaakarma apraahnnam syaath utsargah praatarEva hi"Someone enquired what food items are to be served and when for Upakarma. There is no specific prescription of what should be prepared. But, by tradition, people used to prepare Iddly, Appam etc.
This is more to help young Brahmachari kids (who cannot go hungry for long) to refresh themselves before doing "Samitha Daanam" during the "HOmam".
Needless to mention, that Brahmacharis are required to have their "Kshouram" and bath again BEFORE proceeding to do the Homam.
This exception is made into a rule by practice and everyone observes this eating part more religiously than the others!
