Vedanta in a poetic nutshell
----------------------------
The 29th verse of the TiruppAvai ends with lines
which, without fear of exaggeration, can be easily
regarded as the most succinct and epitomic statement
ever made in the Tamil language on the quintessential
message of Vedanta. The lines are:
?gOvindhaa! un thannOdu
uRROmE aavOm unakkE naam aatcheyvOm *
maRRai nam kaamangaL maaRRElOr empaavaay!?
(my translation):
?GovindhA! Bound to Thee in kinship eternal,
Slaves to Thee, we shall remain,
Now and forever;
But should our hearts harbor
Another thought, fickle or unworthy --
If our life?s desires
Go down the wayward route?
Lord! Change them at once!
(?maRRai nam kaamangaL maaRRu?)
(Change the desires of our life
That they may rise
And flow as but one stream
Of constant, loving yearning for Thee!)?
