Dear Bhagavatas:
In this posting, we continue to enjoy Godha Sthuthi (Slokams 14 to 20)

Dasoham

Anbil Ramaswamy

=======================================================================================

SLOKAM 14:

  • It is customary to present an umbrella to the bridegroom. Rangaraaja is the groom here and he needs to be presented one. The bees that surround the garlands offered to him by Andal are circling around his head giving the appearance of providing an umbrella befitting the “Ekachakraadhipathi” that he is.
  • “Hitvaa bujaantara gataamapi vaijayanteem”: When Andal gave her garland; the bees deserted the Vaijayanti garland on his chest and started circling on Andal’s garland that he wore on his head.

SLOKAM 15:

  • Continuing on the theme of comparing Vaijayanti maala with Andal’s maala, Swami says that the Lord preferred Andal’s garland to Vaijayanti vanamaala.
  • “amOdavatyapi”: Even though vaijayanti maala is fragrant (aamOdam=fragrance). Some flowers have fragrance; some others have color but the garlands worn by the Lord have both. Even so, the Lord prefers Andal’s garland.
  • “raagaanvitaapi, lalitaapi guNottaraapi”: “Raagam” means that which gives pleasure. Vaijayantimaala embraces the Lord’s chest with pleasure.
  • “lalitaapi” denotes it is light, not like the life-size ‘tOmaalai”.
  • guNOttaraapi” vaijayanteem cha maalaam” says Sukha.
  • “Vaijayantee vibhooshaNam” says Swami Desika.
  • Emperumaanaar eulogized it saying “Vaijayantyaa vanamaalaa viraajitam”.
  • In spite of all these (note the use of the word “api’ after each quality), Swami says that Andal’s garland was far superior to the one offered by Maalaakaara or ToNDar aDip poDi Azhwar or Periyaazhwar or even the Vaijayanti maala.
  • “gOdhE! Bhavat adharitaa khalu vaijayanti”: Thus, your maala has made vaijayanti down below in rank. It occupies only the chest whereas your garland adorns the head.

SLOKAM 16:

  • Any Svayamvaram will not be complete without “mangaLa vaadya gOsham”, music, feast etc. can Andal Svayamvaram go without these?

-          “svachchanda kalpita sapeethi rasa pramOda”: When there is “pankti bhOjanam”  partying, and eating there would be lot of fun. More so in a booze party. The bees that have drunk to their heart’s content swarm, swing and sing as they like (svachchanta)

-          “manjuswanaa madhulihO viddadu:” The buzzing of the bees “reengaaram” serves as the light music. (Cf vaNDinam muralum sOlai)

-          “svayamvaram kamapi mangaLa toorya gOsham”: This reengaaram itself serves the purpose of playing “Naagaswaram, mridangam, geTTI mELam” etc and provide a veritable ensemble of orchestra.

SLOKAM 17:

  • Perumaal is “sarva gandan”. He has natural fragrance.

 - Added are those emanating from the lotus emerging from his navel (naabeekamalam),

- those of the Vaijayanti Vanamaala that adorns his broad chest,

- the natural flavor of the breasts of Mahaalakshmi besmeared with sandal paste  and more importantly

- those of the Veda pushpams that are submitted at his feet (Nigama parimaLam).

  • “datE natEna sirasaa tava mouLi maalaam”: The fragrance of the garland worn by Andal and received by him with bowed head at the top of his crown is far superior to the abovementioned perfumes.
  • Why “natEna”?  As a recipient of the honor of garland, the Lord has to bow his head before Andal, the donor!

SLOKAM 18:

  • “chooDaapadEna parigrihya tava uttareeyam”: The Lord did not stop with the garland. He had also taken away and adorned himself with the upper garments of Andal. (uttareeyam).
  • Even to this day, we see that the cloth endings of the wedding couples being tied together so that the couple cannot go apart from each other!
  • The “Vastra apaharaNam” of the gOpis on the banks of Yamuna was for punishing them (SikshaNam) for taking bath in the nude. The “Vastra apaharaNam’ here is for protection (rakshaNam). Rangapathi becomes  “gOdhaapathi”

SLOKAM 19:

  • “ yah sarva gandah iti saadaram udvahanti”: Here Swami says that by all these, “Sarvagandan” becomes  “sarvOttama gandan” (udvahanti)

SLOKAM 20:

  • The maalaa got on the mouli (head) of the Lord. GOdha looks at it with longing eyes her sidelong glance itself becomes a garland of “karu neidal” flowers.
