Audre Lorde in “The Transformation of Silence into Language and Action,” an essay from the critically acclaimed Sister Outsider, states “What are the words you do not yet have?  What do you need to say?  What are the tyrannies you swallow day by day and attempt to make your own, until you will sicken and die of them, still in silence?  Perhaps for some of you here today, I am the face of one of your fears.  Because I am woman, because I am Black, because I am lesbian, because I am myself – a Black woman . . . .” (Lorde, 1984, p. 41).  Refusing to be a participant in the tyrannies of silence as well as the tyrannies of lgbt queer invisibility, these words have served as a guiding force in my life – both encouraging me to come out at the age of 19, to become a high school teacher at the age of 23, and to be a face on the Triad Equality Alliance’s Good People Billboard campaign.

As a high school teacher, I teach Biology, Environmental Science, and EcoJudaism.  I hold a B.S. in Biology from Bennett College and a M.S. in Biology Secondary Education from NCA&T SU (North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University).  I joined the American Hebrew Academy in fall 2002 as a faculty member and currently serve as the Science Department Chair.  I am currently in pursuit of a Ph.D. in Cultural Foundations and Educational Leadership at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.  My professional affiliations include GSAFE (Gay Straight Advocates for Education), NWSA (National Women Studies Association), NAAEE (North American Association of Environmental Educators), and NABT (National Association of Biology Teachers).

I am proud to be a part of the Good People Billboard campaign and to play a role in breaking the tyrannies of lgbt queer invisibility.  Particularly pervasive in the African American community, lgbt queer invisibility is a major hindrance to coalition building and social justice work on all fronts.  And I hope my participation in this project models for ALL the urgency of breaking the the tyrannies silence and invisibility that are prohibitive to all communities engaging in coalition building and queer cultural work.
