Mona

Mona Shattell is Assistant Professor of Nursing at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She is a member of the UNCG Safe Zone program. The Safe Zone program’s purpose is to “provide a setting of appreciation, affirmation, and information for and about the GLBT community” (http://www.uncg.edu/shs/wellness/safezone/). Dr. Shattell is co-faculty advisor to the interdisciplinary student organization Health and Social Justice. The purposes of Health and Social Justice are to connect its members to the larger community through participatory learning and to raise awareness of social inequalities and their effects on health and health care.

Dr. Shattell holds bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees in nursing. Her clinical specialty is in psychiatric/mental health nursing. Her research focuses primarily on mental health, the patient-provider relationship, and Latinas with depressive symptoms. She is an Associate Editor of the journal Issues in Mental Health Nursing. She has authored more than 50 articles and book chapters.

She enjoys practicing Bikram yoga. She likes reading, writing, and traveling; walking her two small dogs, growing a vegetable and herb garden, riding her scooter, talking about cars, and spending time with her family and friends. She is originally from Syracuse, NY and has lived in the Southeastern US for the past several years.
