Ordinary people, ordinary lives

Since its inception in March 2004, the Triad Equality Alliance has undertaken several projects to begin a dialogue in the Triad regarding issues facing lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered members of the community.

The News & Record recently reported on the alliance's latest project, the "abOUT Face" billboards being installed throughout the Triad. This series of billboards shows a diverse group of people who look no different than you, your neighbors or other people in the community. And that is the point -- these are ordinary people, leading ordinary lives. They just happen to be gay, just one more aspect of the Triad's rich diversity.

It is our hope that this year's historic abOUT Face billboards and the fair-minded coverage by members of the media, such as the News & Record, will encourage the Triad to continue evolving into a community that fully embraces with tolerance and understanding the diversity that so enriches all our lives. It is our vision that one day soon all the lesbian and gay people of the Triad will feel safe in saying: "We are your neighbors, and we are gay."
