Long Enough

Greg and Lee
21 years

For over twenty-one years, we have been building our lives together. We have built our relationship on trust and on the belief that we have truly found our lifetime partner with whom we plan to spend the rest of our days. We have lived together in a committed relationship, sharing our love, our lives, our families, our friends, and our lifetime experiences. Our commitment to each other does not need any government sanctioning to be validated, as it is validated by our love. Our love continues to grow and strengthen, and is not contained by our inability to become legally married.

What is contained by our inability to be united in marriage is over 1,000 protections, benefits and responsibilities that are automatically given to society’s heterosexual couples who are united in legal marriage. We are not allowed the tax-free inheritance of the other’s assets. We do not have the automatic right to visit each other in the hospital or make medical decisions for each other. We will pay higher taxes than if we were legally married. We cannot receive social security survivor benefits. We cannot automatically cohabitate in nursing homes.

We want the same protections, benefits and responsibilities that all other married couple’s get by simply signing a legal document that tells the world that they are legally “one.”

The TEA Billboard project has for many years shown positive images of our GLBT community and pointed out that we are a valuable part of the overall community. This billboard campaign, “Haven’t we waited long enough?” asks you, our community, to stand behind us. We ask because we are committed to spending our lives together here, and we ask that you join us in being outwardly supportive of marriage rights for us.

WE HAVE WAITED LONG ENOUGH.
