Long Enough

Kathy and Eliza
25 years

Marriage? Well actually, it’s pretty simple for us. It’s not about proving our commitment to each other. (We’ve already done that—many times over!) It’s not about teaching our families of origin about how to treat our relationship. (We’ve already done that, too!) It’s not about having our union blessed in a religious institution. (We can already do that!)

What it is about is SECURITY. We’re no different from any other married couple in our desire to protect and provide for each other as life partners. We want to be secure in the fact that our home and other assets can be passed on to each other the same way as any married couple would desire. We also want to be secure in knowing that medical personnel will honor our healthcare decisions—even if we’re traveling in some small out-of-the-way burg and we forgot to pack our healthcare power of attorney documents. We’ve created a life together for nearly a quarter of a century. And now we want to be secure in knowing that this life will be honored by all—including our families, our friends, our co-workers, our employers, but also the tax collector, the Social Security administrator, the doctor and nurse, and (when the time comes) the funeral director.
