Ackland
Art Museum (1958)
About 32,000 people per year visit the Ackland Art Museum, which
is located on Columbia Street. The museum features a distinguished
collection of paintings and sculpture dating back to the 1400s.
William Hayes Ackland was actually unknown the University at the
time of his death. He wanted to donate his $1.5 million estate
to Duke to fund the establishment of an art center. One catch
to the donation was that he had to be buried inside the museum.
Duke did not honor the request, and several years later, the issue
was brought up by a UNC law student. UNC ended up getting the
money and the Ackland Art Museum was built on the UNC campus.
