Old
East Dormitory (1793)
Old East, the oldest state university building in the nation,
was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1966. Founders
laid the cornerstone on October 12, 1793, the date that was declared
University Day almost a century later. Old East was an overcrowded
dorm at the time; 56 students were squeezed into fourteen one-window
rooms.
