Diamond Studs

In 1974, a group of Chapel Hill musicians and writers joined forces and told the story of Jesse James through music. Their production – “Diamond Studs” – made its way to Broadway and earned kudos from New York critics. It also spawned a new type of performance – musicians’ theater. “Diamond Studs” is returning to the Triangle. Cast members join host Frank Stasio in the studio for conversation and live music. Jay Farrar

When critics heard Son Volt’s first album “Trace” in 1995 they deemed it “perfect”, calling front man Jay Farrar’s songwriting, “sublime.” Ten years, six albums and two incarnations later, Son Volt is back with a new album and a retrospective. Host Frank Stasio speaks with Jay Farrar, who will also play live in the studio. Son Volt plays a concert at Raleigh’s Disco Rodeo on Wednesday night. (40:00)

The Queen Family

Scholars have long pointed to the connection between old ballads sung in the British Isles and those sung in the mountains of western North Carolina. But it’s getting harder to find those who carry on the tradition. 91-year-old Mary Jane Queen is one such balladeer. She and her family are the subjects of a new documentary, “The Queen Family.” Host Frank Stasio speaks with Mary Jane Queen, director Neal Hutcheson and executive producer Walt Wolfram. Hooverville

John Bemis and Greg Hanson formed a friendship and performing duo out of their mutual love for the harmonizing, brother country acts popular in the 1940s. Now the duet is a quartet and Tuesday marks the release of their second album, “Follow That Trail of Dust Back Home.” Host Eric Hodge talks with the members of Hooverville, and the band performs their mix of country, bluegrass, honky-tonk and Tex-Mex live in the studio.
