For 151 years the State of North Carolina has recognized the Lumbee as a tribe. But for much of that time, that special recognition has meant anything but special treatment. As a student at Shaw University, he also helped organize the first meeting of the Student Non-Violence Coordinating Committee that same year. Forbes recalled those days when he and his friend Reverend Collins Kilburn, also a veteran of the Civil Rights Movement, recorded an interview in the StoryCorps MobileBooth last week. (4:00)
