This summer and fall mark the 30-year anniversary fo the Senate Watergate Hearings. The committee was chaired by Sam Ervin, Jr., a down-home southern senator from North Carolina. A self-proclaimed “simple country lawyer” Ervin gained wide notoriety for his quick wit and dogged pursuit of the truth. Ervin spent 20 years in the senate (from 1954 to 1974) and influenced a generation of politicians who came after him.
