Softball Cheers

Host Frank Stasio goes out in the field – literally – to speak to members of the NC Challengers Under-18 girl’s softball team about their unique cheers. The Challengers, like many girl’s softball teams, create and perform a wide range of cheers during the game, designed to encourage teammates and distract opponents. The Pony Nationals, a girl’s softball tournament that draws teams from all over the country, is taking place in Raleigh this week. (3:00)

Senator Sam

This summer and fall mark the 30-year anniversary fo the Senate Watergate Hearings. The committee was chaired by Sam Ervin, Jr., a down-home southern senator from North Carolina. A self-proclaimed “simple country lawyer” Ervin gained wide notoriety for his quick wit and dogged pursuit of the truth. Ervin spent 20 years in the senate (from 1954 to 1974) and influenced a generation of politicians who came after him. Host Melinda Penkava remembers “Senator Sam” with Rufus Edmisten, Ervin’s longtime aid, and Dr. Karl Campbell, assistant professor of history at Appalachian State. (32:00) (DD)

Mitch Albom

His new book, “The Five People You Meet In Heaven” (Hyperion/2003) tells the story of Eddie, an amusement park mechanic who dies trying to save a young girl. In heaven, he meets five people who help him understand the significance of his own life. It is Albom’s first book since he wrote “Tuesdays With Morrie” (Doubleday/1997), about re-connecting with his dying college professor, Morrie Schwartz. (32:00)
