Edwin Yoder: Edwin Yoder grew up the son of an educator in North Carolina’s Piedmont. He would go on to serve as editor of the Daily Tar Heel, attend Oxford on a Rhodes Scholarship, and become one of the top editorialists in Washington. His new book is “Telling Others What to Think: Recollections of a Pundit” (Louisiana State University Press/2004). Grant Llewellyn: Host Melinda Penkava talks with Grant Llewellyn, who makes his debut as the new music director of the North Carolina Symphony tonight at Meymandi Concert Hall in Raleigh. The symphony performs works by Haydn and Mahler. Llewellyn is also artistic director of the Handel and Haydn Society in Boston and is former assistant conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He’s originally from Wales. (17:30)

Community Colleges

Community Colleges: With manufacturing jobs leaving North Carolina, former employees are seeking re-training. That has led to enrollment at the state’s community colleges growing by 25% since 2000. Some of the schools have been overwhelmed and had to turn students away. Host Melinda Penkava speaks with Scott Ralls, President of Craven Community College; George Vaughan, Editor of the Community College Review; Laura Leslie, reporter at WUNC; and Valerie Jones, Chair of Arts and Sciences Department at Pamlico Community College, about the future of North Carolina’s community colleges. Hurricanes/Lighthouses

Hurricanes: Last year at this time North Carolinians were bracing for the impact of Hurricane Isabel. The western part of the state is still drying out from the remnants of Hurricane Frances, and Ivan is on his way. Host Melinda Penkava talks hurricanes with environmental meteorologist Peter Childs from the State Climate Office of North Carolina and Jay Barnes, director of the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores and author of several books about hurricanes.
