Holiday Books/Weekend Look Ahead

Holiday Reads: Are books on your holiday gift list this year? What are you reading? Host Frank Stasio talks with independent booksellers Nancy Olson and Tom Campbell; Peder Zane, book reviewer for the Raleigh News and Observer; and author June Spence about their picks for the holidays. Weekend Look Ahead: Host Frank Stasio looks ahead to a variety of events happening this weekend. On Saturday, Jack Bolas, a junior at Chapel Hill High will be the only runner from North Carolina at the Foot Locker Cross-country Championships National Finals in San Diego. Burning Coal Theater Company in Raleigh has two plays in repertory, Safe House and 90 in 90. The theater company’s artistic director, Jerome Davis, will give us a preview of those two plays, which run until Dec. 19 at The Kennedy Theater BTI Center in Raleigh. Plus, Jon Lambert, the owner and auctioneer at the Mebane Antique Auction Gallery previews the masterpieces for sale at the Important Annual Americana Auction, Friday at 1:00pm in Mebane. The sale is for buyers only, but the public can preview the sale Thursday.

Prison Ministries/Arts in Chatham

Prison Ministry: Religion is an integral part of life in North Carolina prisons. Host Frank Stasio talks with chaplains Marilyn Gasswint and Oliver Mohammed about prison ministries and the religious life of inmates. He also talks with Bo Lozoff, a founder of the Prison Ashram project, and with a former prisoner who was released from the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women four months ago. The Arts in Chatham County: Producer Leda Hartman visits the Siler City Arts Incubation project to find out how the depressed poultry town is turning its historic buildings into a resource for art and commerce. Producer Allyn Meredith takes us on the Chatham County Arts tour, visiting several artists in their studios and getting a little lost and dusty along the way. And WUNC’s Keith Weston takes us to the Bynum General Store. (17:30)

Holiday Consumerism: The Christmas shopping season is underway. For retail stores, it’s the busiest and most profitable time of year. It’s also a time when economists watch consumer spending more closely to gauge the overall health of the economy. Host Frank Stasio leads a conversation about the retail sector, America’s consumer economy, and the forces that drive us to buy. Guests include: Joel Huber, professor of marketing at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business; Michael Salemi, professor of economics at UNC-Chapel Hill; and Betsy Taylor, president of the Center for a New American Dream. Good Bye to a Branchette: Host Frank Stasio talks with Joe Newberry of the NC State Arts Council about Sister Ethel Eliot of the Branchettes, the legendary NC singing group. She passed away this week. (5:00)

Jackie Torrence: Host Frank Stasio remembers storyteller Jackie Torrence. The Salisbury, North Carolina native passed away on Tuesday. Other guests include: Donald Davis, a storyteller from Ocracoke; Donna Washington, a professional storyteller, author and actress in Durham; and Dionne Byrd, who listened to Jackie Torrance tell stories when she was a child in Salisbury. Dub Addis: Host Frank Stasio talks with Dereje Tesfaye and Fresew Taye, who are members of Dub Addis, a reggae band whose sound is rooted in Ethiopian rhythm. Dub Addis performs at The Temple Ball in Carrboro Friday night. Listener Call-in. (17:00)
