Nnenna Freelon

The latest album by Durham jazz artist Nnenna Freelon tells a new story about the great jazz singer, Billie Holiday. Famous for her singular sound and her tragic life, Billie Holiday has inspired countless musicians. Freelon’s interpretation of her work brings out Holiday’s courage and originality. Host Frank Stasio talks with Nnenna Freelon about the new album, “Blueprint of a Lady: Sketches of Billie Holiday.” (59:00)

Counter-Recruiting

Military recruitment numbers remain high in North Carolina, but they are dragging around the nation. That’s welcome news to anti-war activists, who have launched a national campaign to stop
young people from joining the military. Host Frank Stasio looks at what attracts young people to the military, and whether the military is a viable option at a time of war. Guests include: Army recruiters Major George McGrath and Lt. Col. Tom Christiansen; Garett Reppenhagen, an Iraq war veteran and associate director at the Alliance for Security in Washington, D.C.; and Pam Schwingl, a founder of North Carolina Choices, a group that promotes giving students alternatives to military service. James Applewhite

Stantonsburg native and Duke Professor James Applewhite is the author of nine books of poetry. His latest, “Selected Poems” culls from his work to date. He joins host Frank Stasio to talk about his new work and the effect his study of the cosmos has on his ideas about tobacco farming and other pastoral ways of life. (30:00)
