Jazz Poetry: Quincy Troupe, T.J. Anderson III and Nneena Freelon will get together next week at the “Festival of the Book” at N.C. Central University to talk about the cross pollination of jazz and poetry. Today on “The State of Things,” the poets — Troupe and Anderson — speak with host Frank Stasio about setting words to music and finding the inherent music of words. Troupe is an award winning poet and the author of “Miles: The Autobiography” (Simon & Schuster/1989), which received an American Book Award; “James Baldwin: The Legacy” (Simon & Schuster/1989); and the memoir, “Miles and Me: A Memoir of Miles Davis” (University of California Press/2000). His most recent book of poems is “Transcircularities: New and Selected Poems” (Coffee House Press/ 2002). T.J. Anderson’s books include “At Last Round Up” (University of Arkansas Press/1996,) a collection of poems, and “Notes to Make the Sound Come Right: Four Innovators of Jazz Poetry,” (University of Arkansas Press/2004) a critical study tracing the history of jazz poetry.
