Voices of North Carolina: Host Melinda Penkava talks with Walt Wolfram, professor of linguistics at NC State University. His new documentary, “Voices of North Carolina,” is a portrait of dialects spoken across the state, from the Outer Banks to the Smoky Mountains. Some reveal the traces of English and Irish ancestors; others reflect the influences of Native American languages. The strongest dialects have been fostered by regional isolation or cultural pride. “Voices of North Carolina” airs on UNC-TV on Thursday, January 6 at 10 p.m. Listener Call-In. (37:00)
