Hurricane Relief/Cyril Lance/Dear Senator

Hurricane Relief: Last week, U.S. Rep. Charles Taylor (R) of North Carolina’s 11th District, called for an inquiry into how relief money was disbursed following Hurricane Frances last fall. Many counties in the hardest hit portions of western North Carolina did not receive enough aid, while some counties in the southeastern part of the state – which saw little damage – received significant amounts of federal money. Meanwhile, state lawmakers are trying to find a way to provide for $316 million for the flood victims. Host Rusty Jacobs talks with Kerra Bolton, reporter for the Asheville Citizen-Times; and Laura Leslie, WUNC reporter. (12:00)

Cyril Lance: Cyril Lance grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii playing slack-key guitar and immersed in the 70’s revival of Hawai’ian music, but his life and music changed when he first heard Muddy Waters on the local college radio station. Twenty years later, Cyril Lance plays in a zydeco blues band based in North Carolina. Host Rusty Jacobs talks with Cyril Lance about his music and his latest album, “Live from the Outskirts” (Dog Talk Music / 2004). (20:00)

Dear Senator: For years, Essie Mae Washington-Williams kept mum about her true roots. That was until her father, the late South Carolina Senator and famed segregationist Strom Thurmond, passed away just over a year ago. Host Rusty Jacobs talks with Essie Mae about her new book, “Dear Senator: A Memoir by the Daughter of Strom Thurmond” (Regan Books/2005).
