Siemens Westinghouse Competition Winners: What was your greatest accomplishment at the age of 17? Host Melinda Penkava talks with Xianlin Li & Lucie Guo, two seniors at the North Carolina School for Science and Mathematics in Durham who won $100,000 prize in the team category at this year’s Siemens Westinghouse Competition in Math, Science and Technology. The two 17-year-olds, who will share the prize equally, won the contest for their research on identifying new biomarkers that could improve the early detection and treatment of breast cancer. Holiday Books: Host Melinda Penkava talks wtih Kathy Pories, an editor at Algonquin Books in Chapel Hill about the publishing house’s offerings for holiday books: “Christmas in the South: Holiday Stories from the South’s Best Writers” (Algonquin/October 2004) and “New Stories from the South 2004” edited by Shannon Ravenel (Algonquin/2004).
