Married the to Military/Summer Plans/Fourth of July

Married to the Military: Today’s military is older than it used to be, more professional, and often married with children. With the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, military families are having to adjust to deployments that occur more often and last longer. The impact of the military lifestyle on spouses and families is the subject of “Married to the Military,” a new documentary by American RadioWorks and the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. Host Melinda Penkava talks with producer John Biewen, and Jeanette Mulligan, a military spouse featured in the documentary; Dick Kohn, professor of military history at UNC-Chapel Hill; and Susan Borchesi, whose husband is in the North Carolina National Guard and deployed in Iraq. Listener Call-In. (49:00)

Summer Plans: As part of our series looking at summer plans, host Melinda Pankava speaks with Cathy and David Walmer. Cathy, a nurse practitioner, and David, chief of reproductive endocrinology at Duke University, spent part of this summer working in Haiti and Tanzania through their non-profit Family Health Ministries. (6:00)

The 4th of July: Voices from community organizers from across the state, explaining some of the more unique Fourth of July celebrations. (2:00)

June Spence: An essay from Raleigh writer June Spence, author of “Change Baby,” recalling a Fourth of July celebration from 28 years ago. (3:00)
