Popular Culture in Israel and Palestine

The new book, “Palestine, Israel and the Politics of Popular Culture” (Duke University Press/2005) rounds up several provocative ideas about the ways in which Israelis and Palestinians exchange information, and messages of anger and hope through popular culture. Host Frank Stasio speaks with Rebecca Stein, assistant professor of cultural anthropology at Duke; and Ted Swedenburg, the co-editor of the book, about their individual work on tourism and music respectively. Laleh Khahili and Melani McAlister also join the conversation to talk about their work on cyber culture and depictions of the Holy Land in the bestselling “Left Behind” series of novels.
