Race and Rape

Duke University President Richard Brodhead held a press conference last night to address the allegations that an African-American woman was gang-raped by white members of the men’s lacrosse team. Many members of the community have spoken out on various aspects of the case, but one community that is perhaps most directly affected is also one that has been largely unheard: Durham’s African-American community. Host Frank Stasio explores the many and varied opinions of the case within Duke and Durham’s black community with: Mark Anthony Neal, an associate professor of African-American studies at Duke; Treva Lindsey, a graduate student at Duke; Charlotte Pierce-Baker, a research professor in the women’s studies program at Duke; and John McCann, a columnist with Durham Herald-Sun.
