College Sports Culture

In his novel, “I Am Charlotte Simmons”, author Tom Wolfe chronicled the boorish and immoral activities of student-athletes at fictional DuPont University. Now, in another Wolfeian case of life imitating art, Duke University finds itself in the middle of a case of improper, unethical, and possibly illegal acts perpetrated by its men’s lacrosse team. Has the culture of major college sports harmed the educational mission of universities? Host Frank Stasio speaks with Bill Friday, former president of the UNC system and former chair of the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics; Craig Kocher, director of religious life at Duke University; and Brad Wolverton, sports editor at the Chronicle of Higher Education, about the culture of big-time college sports and its affect on campus life.
