Freemason/Stephen Kirk/Shakori Hills

Free Masons: Freemasonry, a fraternity founded by stonemasons in Europe during medieval times, is alive and well in North Carolina. But the two Masonic groups in the state are divided along racial lines. Recently, the two groups voted on separate resolutions that would recognize the other. Host Frank Stasio talks about the outcome of those votes with Milton “Toby” Fitch, Grand Master of the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of North Carolina, and Leonard Safrit, Jr., Grand Master of the Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons of North Carolina. (12:00)

Stephen Kirk: What draws famous – and not so famous – writers to the North Carolina mountains? Host Frank Stasio talks with Stephen Kirk about the area that has, at one time or another, hosted writers as diverse as Thomas Wolfe, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Gail Godwin. Kirk’s new book is “Scribblers” (John.F. Blair/October 2004). (20:00)

Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival of Dance and Music: Host Frank Stasio talks with festival organizer Robert Mitchener (http://www.grassrootsfest.org/FallShakori/), and with Conjunto Los Pochos, a duo from L.A. who will be performing this weekend at the Festival, as well as with Jeb Puryear of the band Donna the Buffalo.
