Units are reflagged and
renamed multiple times throughout their existence and as the
units change in type, the numbers may no longer correspond to
the predecessor.
Most units draw their
lineage from location rather than type of unit.
As the force structure
changes, the location and members of the unit often matter more
than the unit itself when transferring lineage.
Also, as the force
structure reduces the size of the National Guard units are
folded together and share lineage.
In that case sometimes
a Company in one unit may carry the lineage and honors of an
entire Battalion of WWII, as seen with the Brigade Support
Battalion (BSB).
Also, the Companies or
Battalions of a WWII Unit may have become several units or
several WWII units may be come one in today's force structure.
For example, the 180th
Infantry of WWII is three units today and the WWII
160th Field Artillery Battalion (105mm Howitzer) and 171st
Field Artillery Battalion (105mm Howitzer) are one unit today.
