Re: C&U archives authority
This would be me!
I get items in dribs and drabs; I do manage to get my hands on most of
the publications, and one or two offices (like PR and HR) do send over
files from time to time. Otherwise, alumni, staff, and faculty bring or
send things over that they feel are "historic"--like photographs,
scrapbooks, clippings, articles, etc. Most of my accessions are
measured in item numbers, not feet.
For a college that has been in existence for nearly 200 years, there
should be a LOT more in the Archives than what is actually here. It's
really depressing and daunting when I think about all the great stuff
that has no doubt been tossed.
The solution, of course, is a records management program, and I'm hoping
to at least pitch one to the administration next year. I'm sure they
will approve it in theory, but when it comes time to fund it and provide
me with an assistant, that will be another matter entirely. I'm the
lone arranger here, and spend nearly all my time on administrative work,
so I get nothing done as it is, and if I have to devote, say, half my
time to a records program, I'll get done--let's see, my math is rusty,
but I think half of nothing is: nothing.
I've been describing a records program to everyone I run into here
(those who don't see me coming and run away themselves) and extolling
its benefits, and they all seem to be interested and supportive, so
maybe there's a chance of actually implementing one.
Maybe I can get a grant.

Subject: C&U archives authority
I am interested in hearing from other C&U archivists with NO formal
authority to collect university records (And little chance of getting
any).
I am interested in learning more about how and what you collect and some
long term insight.
