Re: More on N. Baker and Double Fold
I think the one point you made, Peter, that I should have added to my letter
of yesterday is the one I snipped out below on access; the very nature of
public institutions (and Baker's main issue seems to be with public
institutions, rather than private) demands that all collections be made
available to the public, even if they are screened by requiring a "genuine
research topic" or whatever euphemism gets used to keep the kindergarten
kids out.
I believe you're absolutely right - the NYPL or LC would be pilloried if
their policies demanded that sort of approach. On the positive side, one
can only hope Baker is now becoming aware of the details that go into
running a collection. Staffing? Security? Access? Reference?
Cataloging? All issues that the reviews, at least, make no mention of
Baker's position. As I wrote yesterday, there's a certain dose of reality
missing from Baker's gestalt.
