Re: What is the function of ἐν in Galatians 3:12?

Thanks for the explanation, Nathaniel.

What about the question of whether you meant "be alive" vs "have conduct"?

Re: What is the function of ἐν in Galatians 3:12?

For ζάω not so much conduct one's life or retain one's live, as simply to live = be alive = have life. Could we say "stays alive"? I.e. as long as one is "in" the law. That the things a person are the domain metaphorical container *in which* they live. I don't understand MAubrey...

Re: What is the function of ἐν in Galatians 3:12?

So you are not taking ζήσεται as "[gain/retain] the state of being alive" but rather as "conduct"?

Re: What is the function of ἐν in Galatians 3:12?

Just translate it 'in'. When I read it as "in" it does not communicate any meaning to me, at least not an unambiguous meaning. What does "in" communicate to you in this context? By the way, I find it fascinating that Matthew 4:4 uses yet another preposition to link with ζήσεται !

Re: What is the function of ἐν in Galatians 3:12?

Okay, I see it. So it is "shall live by/because of/on account of [doing?] them".
Thanks Jonathon; makes sense.

Re: What is the function of ἐν in Galatians 3:12?

Okay, so "live according to their guidance"? Or " by means of obeying them, gain life"?

What does "by" suggest in that context?

Thanks.

What is the function of ἐν in Galatians 3:12?

What is the function of ἐν in Galatians 3:12? Gal 3:12 MGNT - ὁ δὲ νόμος οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκ πίστεως ἀλλ᾽ ὁ ποιήσας αὐτὰ ζήσεται ἐν αὐτοῖς He's obviously quoting the OT: Lev 18:5 LXX - καὶ φυλάξεσθε πάντα τὰ προστάγματά μου καὶ πάντα τὰ κρίματά μου καὶ ποιήσετε αὐτά ἃ ποιήσας ἄνθρωπος ζήσεται ἐν αὐτοῗς ἐγὼ...

Re: Has anyone tried to group NT texts by a commonality of writing style among disparate NT authors?

Has anyone tried to group NT texts by a commonality of writing style among disparate NT authors? Yes, I have seen that analysis done in a couple of different ways, but I do not have any reference handy. The last one I remember seeing at SBL a few years ago was done based on syntax patterns. Syntax ...

Has anyone tried to group NT texts by a commonality of writing style among disparate NT authors?

Has anyone tried to group NT texts by a commonality of writing style among disparate NT authors? From what I understand, the Pastorals are held by scholars to share sufficient features so that they are comfortable grouping them together as being by the same the author (which is not necessarily the s...
