Re: ερχομαι επι for sexual activity

Thanks, Ken, that's very helpful. 2. What was the reviser intending? He didn't really care how it was understood. He was simply trying to achieve lexical consistency by using the most basic Greek equivalent for each Hebrew word. בא = ἦλθεν and אל = ἐπὶ . I suppose that has to be the explanation. If ...

ερχομαι επι for sexual activity

I'm puzzled by a turn of phrase in the Antiochene text of 2 Regn. 17:25: ὁ δὲ Ἀμεσσὰ ἦν υἱὸς Ιἕθερ τοῦ Ἰεζραηλίτου· ὃς ἦλθεν ἐπὶ τὴν Ἀβιγαίαν θυγατέρα Ἱεσσαὶ The expected wording would be εισερχομαι προς--which is what one finds here in the "standard" Septuagint. Where the subject is a man...

Re: Searching for a Greek Text on Greek Suffixes and Word Fo

The most comprehensive and wide-ranging treatment of Greek suffixes etc. known to me is in vol. 1 of Eduard Schwyzer's Griechische Grammatik (Munich: C. H. Beck); I have the 6th edition, 1990, though I don't know whether that's the most recent edition. You might possibly have come across that on the...

Re: Interacting with a text without verse numbers marked

Another advantage of un-verse-numbered text is that it exercises your knowledge of the text itself. When you look for a passage in a verse-numbered text, your search is often guided mainly (or even entirely) by the numbers. But when you look in an unnumbered text, you have to recognize where you are...

Re: Are these Hebraisms?

The second example would indeed be usually considered a Semiticism--in fact doubly so: (1) The use of a genitive of quality (δόξης) instead of an adjective is Semitic, as noted by BDF §165 ("Classical Greek exhibits very sparse parallels, in poetry only"); and (2) "this Semitic manner...

Re: Advice Needed: Septuagint Resources

A very useful resource. Here’s exactly the same list reshuffled into subcategories, but without any other alterations (and without removing any of the duplications): 1. EDITIONS: 1.1 MS TRANSCRIPTIONS AND PHOTOFACSIMILES Lake, Kirsopp. Codex Sinaiticus Petropolitanus et Friderico-Augustanus Lipsiens...

Re: Aligned texts for the LXX

I suppose I'm looking for formal equivalence without being too 'translation Greek', I'm looking for LXX books that are more or less like the ESV. My personal feeling is that much of the LXX (e.g. large swathes of the Torah and the history books) would broadly fit that description. In most sentences...

Re: Advice Needed: New Testament Commentaries

Purely as a discussion point, might I attempt an integrated and prioritized synopsis of the above? I assume that most users would prefer (a) more thorough works and (b) works that are more representative of the scholarship of the period. On that basis, I’d suggest starting with the work marked 1, th...

Re: Advice Needed: New Testament Commentaries

What other single-book commentaries should we consider? Then there are the various commentaries of Lightfoot and Westcott, although it might be argued that they’re not quite such a high priority because their material has been recycled so often. (Everyone who writes nowadays on the same books takes...

Re: Nestle 1904 (BFBS) in Unicode

Every time I see one of those webpages, I am sorely tempted to add a post asserting that the works of Tischendorf were actually written by Francis Bacon, revealing in code that Elvis Presley is alive and well and the victim of a hideous conspiracy. The only thing that holds me back is the sure and c...
