Re: A papyrus for linguistic fun and profit...

Thanks Barry for this little joyride to Alexandria. I only had time for a short dive into the first part. Having little idea of the context, it is puzzling to make word choices - Looking forward to your correction... The dispute.. from Sarapion to brother Dorion, Joy and health in all things. About ...

Re: Apollonaris Matthew text

Thanks, Stephen. It does seem that he was referring to the human spirit. Looking around at summations of Apollonaris's work, he appears to have been orthodox in general, apart from his theory of Jesus not having a human spirit.

Apollonaris Matthew text

I'm puzzled by a use of πνευμα without the article. The context is a chapter 11 fragment of Apollonaris's Matthew commentary in the pericope on the greatness of John in relation to the Kingdom of heaven. I'm having some trouble understanding his syntax. Concerning verse 12 he writes: βίᾳ δὲ τὴν βασι...

Re: The exact time of "meta"

It appears that μετὰ ταῦτα is a general marker for the next relevant event to an author's discourse. The NT uses a a number words for immediately , which should be keyed to your Strongs. for example: εὐθέως, ἐξαυτῆς, παραχρῆμα etc The following is from Brill's entry on μετὰ: ⓓ after, of time OD. 22....

Re: Latin question for Greek word

Thanks very much indeed. Origen is quite an original thinker - this passage seems to be referencing the seizing of the kingdom as the Church father's understood Matthew 11:12, but warning that those who don't want to give up their sin won't really obtain the kingdom's spiritual riches. Perhaps refer...

Re: Latin question for Greek word

Had to leave quickly and didn't notice some of the misspellings. Here is the corrected version if anyone would like to help me understand this latin quote. Est tamen aliquid et secundum spiritalem intelligentium culpabiliter rapere, sicut illi laudabiliter 'rapiunt Regnum coelerum'. Ut verbi causa d...

Re: Latin question for Greek word

" It seems just be talking about" should read "It seems to be referring to 1 Cor 6:10 in the section before the final quote" (Must be the rum...)

Re: Latin question for Greek word

I'm wondering if some latin light could be shed on Origen's further explanation of this verse. It seems just be talking about 1 Cor 6:10 about άραγες /raptores being excluded from the Kingdom of God, and then the latin translationr reads: "Est tamen aliquid et secondum spirtalem intelligentium ...

Identifying an indistinct Greek word

On Fred Sanders "Scriptorium Daily" blog there is a an indistinct printed Greek word from Polanus's Axioms. They cannot make it out and I cannot figure out how to upload the gif here. In case anyone would like to give it a shot, the gif is at the bottom of this post: http://scriptoriumdail...
