Re: Colors in Ancient Greek

Ran into ὕσγινον today. ὕσγῐνον, τό, a vegetable dye of bright crimson or scarlet colour, perh. the kermes (v. ὕσγη), Nic. Th. 511, AP 6.254 ( Myrin. ); hysginum, Vitr. 7.14.1 (excygno codd.), Plin. HN 9.140, 21.170, 35.45 (hygino, yyg-, yog-, id genus, codd.), Dig. 32.1.78.5, Isid. Etym. 19.17.15 (...

Re: Weekend Papyrus 6-11-2021

I've finally had to resort to an Accordance workspace specifically for these :) Having ready access to all the dictionaries and grammars plus the web resources - not least a page on the Ancient Greek month names - it just became too hard swapping back and fourth. Not that it has everything I want bu...

Re: The Weekend Papyrus 6-4-2021

Hi Barry, I'm so far going with ἔχων should be ἔχον as far as agreement errors go. But I'm puzzling over how ὥστε is functioning here. I am possibly missing it's common 'so that' use but here it just seems to be redundant to the dative sense conveyed by Διονυσἰῳ. LSJ notes a usage like this, if I'm...

Re: The Weekend Papyrus 6-4-2021

The addressing ones are really interesting - thanx. Not a generally usable addressing system today. The postman must have known the recipients or people who did - I wonder when envelopes first came in. I can't remember which book I read it in, but usually the letter was given to an acquaintance who...

Re: Don't Do Word Studies

Is there a summary anywhere? Don't have time to watch (non-cat) videos during working hours. I watched a good chunk of it, but not all. A quick list : watch diachronic vs synchronic - you don't want temporally inappropriate definitions watch context don't assume etymology tells you contemporaneous ...

Re: Error in William D. Mounce's Morphology of Biblical Greek?

If you are referring to the last two rows in the table in 2.7 ε + η -> α η + α -> α these have been corrected in my edition in Accordance to : ε + η -> η η + α -> η So I guess the error was found and corrected in a later edition. My print edition shows as Matthew has posted below. Thx D

Re: The Weekend Papyrus 5-28-2021

Hi Daniel, You could try this book by Stanley Stowers, Letter Writing in Greco-Roman Antiquity ( Google Books link ). It looks at all sorts of letters in general, but should have some discussion concerning the pre and post letter greetings. There's also this rather excellent Open Access (!) book on...
