Re: Question About Accents: Syntactical Implications of εἰμι verses εἰμί

If the verb is accented in John 8:58, why isn’t it ἐγὼ εἴμι? Is this treated somewhere? I would try Carson, Greek Accents, A Student's Manual. Ok, looked it up ... εἰμί is enclitic throughout the indicative with the exception of εἴ according to Carson. On page 139 in his treatment of μι verbs in ge...

Re: Dispute about σήμερον in the syntax of Luke 23:43

So it looks like we can't be 100% certain about what Luke meant (i.e. what he expected the readers to understand Jesus saying) unless we go to textual criticism first, which we can't do here. We could only take different readings and try to analyze them syntactically, trying to find out if it's pos...

Re: Relative pronouns as sentence separators

I read this by Dickey on the systems of address recently https://www.academia.edu/8113272/The_Gr ... n_CQ_2004_

which is interesting in respect of Latin influence on Greek.

Thx

Re: Dispute about σήμερον in the syntax of Luke 23:43

καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ: ἀμήν σοι λέγω, σήμερον μετ' ἐμοῦ ἔσῃ ἐν τῷ παραδείσῳ (Luke 23:43) Let me preface my question by stating I am fully aware of the “No exegesis” rule here at B-Greek. I trust I am not infringing this rule by asking whether, in the view of people having a specialist knowledge of Biblica...

Re: Need clarification on Galatians 6:3

It still makes little sense to me, because verse 3 just comes out of nowhere, having no apparent connection with either the passages before or after it. It's like a thought interjected in the middle of two conversations about different things. On first reading of 6:1-6:5 I don't think it 6:3 refers...

Re: Need clarification on Galatians 6:3

So, this is what I am understanding from you and Daniel...(I will break it down, I will put in bold my choice in considering grammar) εἰ - if γὰρ - because , for δοκεῖ - thinks, imagines, considers, appear, is of the opinion τις - someone εἶναί - "to be" verb in the present infinitive &qu...

Re: Need clarification on Galatians 6:3

OK...so it seems like part of my problem comes from τις...and perhaps I am missing something. From my understanding, when τις is joined with a substantive or adjective taken as a substantive, the meaning is morphed into "a certain person," "a certain thing," "someone,"...

Re: Need clarification on Galatians 6:3

The conversation has moved on a bit but as I drafted this earlier I'll post it, but Eeli has covered the same ground. You appear to have rendered εἶναι τι and μηδὲν ὡν as having essentially the same meaning, which they do not. I was initially wondering how you think the first three verbs relate to o...

Re: Need clarification on Galatians 6:3

Hi It's generally helpful to quote the Greek so people don't have to go find it. I don't think μηδέν is your problem here. Gal. 6:3 Because if he is of the opinion that he is nothing, of no weight of character, then he is deceiving himself. does not render the Greek: Gal. 6:3 εἰ γὰρ δοκεῖ τις εἶναί ...

Re: The Weekend Papyrus 6-25-2021

Hi ya, This one has a lot in it - it’s taking me a while. For reference its P.Oxy 3.533 not P.Oxy 3.353. Has anyone done a gazateer of these place names or in general, ancient Hellenistic names ? That would be helpful in getting a bit of a feel for where the letters are going. Looks like Trismegisto...
