Re: John 8:33 Antecedant of "they"

It is sometimes said that the presence/absence of the preposition εἰς makes a difference. In v. 30 they “believe in him,” i.e. they believe he truly is who he says he is, but in v. 31 they only “believe him,” in the sense that they believe what he just said, they accept that one particular statement...

Re: Capitalisation of διαβόλος in Ephesians 6:11

Aristotle. The word appears three times in the Topics, part of the Posterior Analytics. All three occurrences are in Book 4. The first of them, in section 5, is on p. 462 of the Loeb edition:

Re: From παλαιστή to πῆχυς (Psalm 39:5, Matt 6:27, Luke 12:25)

The thing that struck me about the examples below is that the passage appears to want a small amount, of which even that no person is capable of adding to their life through worry. A cubit is about a quarter of the body length 6ft man. That seems a lot for a comparison of this type. Yes, the shorte...

Re: From παλαιστή to πῆχυς (Psalm 39:5, Matt 6:27, Luke 12:25)

I think this requires an assessment of how likely the original audience would have made the connection. Hi Jacob. Thank you for your reply. I agree it would be helpful to find out how well known Psalm 39 was among the population at large in first-century Judea, but I have no idea how to set about d...

From παλαιστή to πῆχυς (Psalm 39:5, Matt 6:27, Luke 12:25)

Before I start, allow me to say that I hope this post is in order, in accordance with B-Greek house rules, and that this is the right forum for it. If not, please feel free to move it or delete it. NT translators and editors find it difficult to make up their minds about Jesus’ saying reported in Ma...

Re: Translation of the Words ἓν, ἤρξαντο, ἀναφορὰν ἔχειν

I'd just like to add a further comment about Dr. Rollinson's fine book. A month or two ago I was looking for a suitable textbook for home study. I liked the look of Dr. Rollinson's book, so I downloaded it and showed it to an online acquaintance who is a professor of Classical Greek at Cambridge Uni...

Re: Lamech's number in the MT and the LXX (Gen 4:24)

Thank you, Tony, for taking the trouble to give such a fully documented answer to my question. Iver Larsen’s long article, in particular, makes a compelling case that “seventy-seven times,” rather than “seventy times seven times,” is more likely to be the correct translation of ἑβδομηκοντάκις ἑπτά i...

Lamech's number in the MT and the LXX (Gen 4:24)

“Seventy-seven” in Hebrew, “but “seventy times seven” in Greek: כִּ֥י שִׁבְעָתַ֖יִם יֻקַּם־ קָ֑יִן וְלֶ֖מֶךְ שִׁבְעִ֥ים וְשִׁבְעָֽה׃ ὅτι ἑπτάκις ἐκδεδίκηται ἐκ Καιν ἐκ δὲ Λαμεχ ἑβδομηκοντάκις ἑπτά Is it known what the Seventy had in mind when they made the change? Can it have been simply to make Lam...

Re: Why not start with modern Greek?

Learning modern Hebrew will only assist in learning biblical Hebrew, but learning modern Hebrew is not sufficient for proficiency in the biblical language. Since you live in Israel, maybe you can confirm or deny this. What I was told is that for someone who has learned modern Hebrew, reading the Bi...

Re: Center for New Testament Restoration

As a newcomer to B-Greek, and also to the study of Biblical Greek, I apologize if I have misunderstood anything in your earlier posts on this thread, but I would like to ask you this: Will the CNTR project make it possible to click on any verse in the NT and see at a glance all the different manuscr...
