Re: James 1:5 αἰτείτω παρὰ τοῦ διδόντος θεοῦ πᾶσιν ἁπλῶς καὶ μὴ ὀνειδίζοντος parsing
Thanks for the replies. I was looking at the author's intent incorrectly. I was seeing the phrases following θεοῦ and did not want to move them forward toward the article. I realized that the author moved θεοῦ forward to emphasize it, which is why the phrases were interrupted. So, the [giving with s...

James 1:5 αἰτείτω παρὰ τοῦ διδόντος θεοῦ πᾶσιν ἁπλῶς καὶ μὴ ὀνειδίζοντος parsing
I'm parsing the phrase from James 1:5, αἰτείτω παρὰ τοῦ διδόντος θεοῦ πᾶσιν ἁπλῶς καὶ μὴ ὀνειδίζοντος and coming up with you must ask of the giving God with all sincerity and not reproaching I realize that no one translates it that way. τοῦ διδόντος is clearly an attributive participle and describes...

Thank you! I was leaning that way, but I wanted an informed opinion.

Thanks in advance!
I'm trying to understand if "you must not boast and you must not lie" is grammatically valid; that is, if the negation applies to both imperatives.μὴ κατακαυχᾶσθε καὶ ψεύδεσθε
Thanks in advance!

Re: Infinitives in Luke 3:21-22
Barry, Nathaniel, thank you for your input. I'm an amateur translator, and I avoid simply assuming that I understand constructions I don't understand. That Luke ties all three infinitives to the initial Ἐγένετο makes sense, as does Luke imitating the style of the LXX. Your input allows me to hold th...

Thank you for the response; it was helpful. I'm not sure I fully agree, but it expands my thinking. I'd appreciate a bit of courtesy, however.

Matthew 5.3: Why is the article not translated in τῷ πνεύματι?
I checked the various Greek texts, and they all have the article. My impression is that "the spirit" should, by default, translated as the Spirit, yet I don't see that in English translations going back to Wycliffe; in fact, I don't see "the" at all. Any thoughts?
