Re: A Latin Definition of ‘Deponent’ (Donatus)

I came across the following definition of deponent verbs by Donatus, Ars Minor (4th cen. CE): Deponentia quae sunt? Quae in ‘r’ desinunt, ut passiva, sed ea dempta Latina non sunt, ut ‘luctor,’ ‘loquor’. What are the deponents? Those which end in ‘r’, like the passives, but when removed are not Lat...

Weekend Papyrus 6-11-2021

P.Oxy 3.531, a letter from a father to his son. Structurally the letter reminds me more of 2 and 3 John than anything else, but see what you think. 1 Κορνήλιος Ἱέρακι τῷ γλυκυτάτωι υἱῷ 2 χαίρειν. 3 ἡδέως σε ἀσπαζόμεθα πάντες οἱ ἐν οἴκωι καὶ 4 τοὺς μετʼ ἐσοῦ πάντας. περὶ οὗ μοι παλλάκεις 5 γράφεις ἀν...

Re: Teaching the Genitive

I'd like to ask the pedagogues, teachers, and self-learners on the forum how you teach what the genitive means. Do you give a basic meaning of possession or intrinsic relationship and hope the student infers the full usage in their reading, or do you go the full Wallace and give the students a list...

Re: Gender concordance with the article

Jonathan, I was just about to post these same sections from Smyth, but wanted to look at the Cambridge as well.

Re: Gender concordance with the article

Quick (hopefully question). I am spending time with someone who has their Phd in classics, primarily working through Lucian’s works. During the course of one of our side discussions I was asking about the use of the article / variants of πας where there are multiple referents with different genders...

Re: The Weekend Papyrus 6-4-2021

Hi Barry, I'm so far going with ἔχων should be ἔχον as far as agreement errors go. But I'm puzzling over how ὥστε is functioning here. I am possibly missing it's common 'so that' use but here it just seems to be redundant to the dative sense conveyed by Διονυσἰῳ. LSJ notes a usage like this, if I'm...

Re: Don't Do Word Studies

As far as I can, see the title of the video reads, "Bible Study: How Greek word studies can lead you astray." If it says what you say it is, then time to get a new pair of glasses. :) Such comments are unnecessary, and please avoid them. I originally found the video from someone's posting...

Re: Don't Do Word Studies

I listened to the video linked to in its entirety and find the title of this thread to be a misrepresention of what the speaker on the video said. What he actually said is So I'm not saying, "Don't do word studies." What I am trying to say is "Be very careful when doing word studies ...

The Weekend Papyrus 6-4-2021

P.Oxy 3.529 This letter lacks the name of the sender. It's otherwise intact. See if you can spot the agreement error. Otherwise, there is some familiar NT vocabulary, and the ending should remind you of similar language in the NT. 1 πρὸ μὲν [πάντων εὔχομαί σε 2 ὑγιαίνειν. κόμ[ισ]αι διὰ Κ[έ]ρ- 3 δωνο...

Don't Do Word Studies

Well, maybe go ahead, but with some qualifications. Here is an excellent video which explores the pitfalls of word studies.
