Non-backgrounded adverbial participle+indicative as a type of serial verb construction. Do I see water trying to flow uphill? Non-backgrounded adverbial participle+indicative as a type of serial verb construction. PS: I'm not saying that there aren't environments where it might appear so, I'm just ...

Re: How to study languages

Thanks for the PDF link. Things can be distilled into comprehensible input and meaningful production. Yes. But the way to provide comprehensive input and meaningful production appropriately in any given situation or setting ... that's what master teachers are for, and SIOP gives some really good ad...

Re: εἰς in Matt. 6:13//Lk. 11:4

If poeple are willing to consider backgrounds, they should factor in the rabbinic idiom לידי נסיון "to the hands of trial", attested in a prayer. 1. Personally, I think that the phrase in Mt and Lk refers to succumbing to the temption as well as encountering temptation, and that such a &qu...

Re: Matt. 4:16 καθημαι and Matt. 5:1 καθιζω

Phillip, Thank you for the kind words. On suppletion and words in any language, it is the overall pattern that shows how things work. Like 'go' and 'went' in English. There is no absolute rule on what will or will not work, and there are situations where there is partial suppletion, when the tendenc...

Re: Matt. 4:16 καθημαι and Matt. 5:1 καθιζω

The difference in the words καθίσαι and καθῆσθαι deals more with lexical suppletion for aspect than conscious manipulation of voice/διάθεσις. Suppletion is where two words are fused to make one word, like δραμεῖν [perfective] and τρέχειν [continuative/open] make up the word for "run" and ἐ...

Re: Meta Language

For some words we may want to use modern Greek. I am pretty sure that μορφολογία exists in modern Greek, though I haven't checked nor do I know its history. A good place to start is ἡ τέχνη (ὁ Διονύσιος ὁ θρᾷξ) Here is his definition of a word and a sentence: λέξις ἐστὶ μέρος ἐλάχιστον τοῦ κατὰ σύντ...

Re: Meta Language

May I suggest using Greek metalanguage? It might help keeping people in the language, should that be a goal, and probably forces more flexibility because students are learning the metalanguage across a language divide rather than subliminally thinking that it is some kind of bedrock. [I see this thi...
