Re: Ephesians 2:8 - τοῦτο...τὸ δῶρον

If we take τοῦτο to modify τὸ δῶρον giving the translation, "This not of yourselves but of God gift, is not of works," then τοῦτο and δῶρον must agree in gender and number. However, the neuter, δῶρον, cannot refer to either grace, faith or the implied salvation, individually, since all thr...

Re: Ephesians 2:8 - τοῦτο...τὸ δῶρον

A pronoun should agree with its antecedent in gender and number. αὕτη does not agree with δῶρον in gender and number. τοῦτο does agree with δῶρον in gender and number. How could δῶρον be the antecedent of αὕτη as you constructed the phrase? I am still confused about how to express a feminine πίστεως...

Re: Ephesians 2:8 - τοῦτο...τὸ δῶρον

So, πίστεως can never be a δῶρον.

How would you refer to πίστεως as a gift?

Ephesians 2:8 - τοῦτο...τὸ δῶρον

Ephesians 2:8

τῇ γὰρ χάριτί ἐστε σεσῳσμένοι διὰ πίστεως καὶ τοῦτο οὐκ ἐξ ὑμῶν θεοῦ τὸ δῶρον

τοῦτο and δῶρον agree being neuter and singular.

So, why shouldn't we understand the phrase, "τοῦτο...τὸ δῶρον," to apply to the previous noun, πίστεως?

Romans 3:12 - Substantival Participle

Romans 3:12 οὐκ ἐστιν ὁ ποιων χρηστοτητα οὐκ ἐστιν ἑως ἑνος. This was explained to me in this manner, "As for the Psalmist, Paul, when he quotes him, uses a substantival participle… i.e. nobody always does good. One rotten egg soils the batch." This was said to oppose the position that the...

Re: Ephesians 1:11 - ένεργοῦντος

You have answered my question in saying, "Both of the elements of this translation "work with" and "all things" are very vague and open to a lot of interpretation." When you ask, "Are you asking whether the meaning of the Greek is more or less covered by that Engli...

Ephesians 1:11 - ένεργοῦντος

Ephesians 1:11 ἐν ῷ και ἐκληρωθημεν προορισθεντες κατα προθεσιν τοῦ τα παντα ἐνεργοῦντος κατα την βουλην τοῦ θεληματος αυτοῦ Someone has proposed this as a possible translation: "by whom we have been called according to a plan of the one who is working with all things according to the intention...

Re: Acts 13:48 - Subordinate Clause

Finally, as Stephen pointed out right at the beginning, the text itself does not grammatically necessitate causation in either direction, but simply identity of the two descriptions; the ones who believed were as many as (the same as) the ones who had been appointed for eternal life. If you just gi...

Re: Acts 13:48 - Subordinate Clause

Acts 13:48 includes this: και ἐπιστευσαν ὁσοι ἡσαν τεταγμενοι εἰσζην αἰωνιον Someone explained this verse thusly, "οσοι (all who, a subgroup of a previously identified main group) introduces a subordinate clause, but "believed" is in the main clause. In the subordinate clause (includ...

Re: Acts 13:48 - Subordinate Clause

Dear Friends, ἐπίστευσαν belongs to the main clause and is the predicate, followed by a subordinate clause that describes the already believing gentiles as such being appointed to eternal life. I'd say, that believe is forefronted and the appointment is the result of it. Right ? Yours Peter, German...
