Re: John 8:25

This is of course is odd in that John uses ἐν ἀρχῇ, ἀπ' ἀρχῆς, ἐξ ἀρχῆς elsewhere. Statements that take this form are common in exegetical literature. I don't think they are valid. If you press that logic it leads to absurd results. In a small sample of someones writing what has been done elsewhere...

Re: John 8:25

I don't think we are going to add much to what centuries worth of readers have seen in this text. τὴν ἀρχήν is adverbial no matter how you cut it -- such adverbial accusatives are not uncommon in Greek, and it doesn't strike me as particularly odd as a variaton on ἐν ἀρχῇ or ἐξ ἀρχῆς. λαλῶ, practic...

John 8:25

Hi All, Ran into this : “Ἔλεγον οὖν αὐτῷ· σὺ τίς εἶ; εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς· τὴν ἀρχὴν ὅ τι καὶ λαλῶ ὑμῖν;” (Ἰωάννην 8·25 GNT28-T) https://accordance.bible/link/read/GNT28-T#John_8:25 This seems to have puzzled translators and grammarians a good bit. There are several points at issue. 1. What exactly...

Re: διηγησις - εν τη οδω

κατὰ Trenchard τίνι ὑποτακτικὸς (post-positive νομίζω;) ἐστιν, ἀλλὰ τινὶ οὐ. οὐτὸς τί, τίνα, τινάς, τινές, τίνι, τινῶν, τίς, καὶ τισί(ν) ἀναγράφει, ἀλλʹ οὐκ ἄλλο. Δανιήλ. But that's exactly wrong. The interrogative τίς κτλ. is particularly not postpositive, while the indefinite τὶς κτλ. is. Thus, o...

Re: In John 17:3, are these two variants identical in meaning?

So would it be fair to say that neither rendering, cause or effect, can be ruled out? Our best bet then being to look for contextual clues? IE: The grammar itself doesn't lean either way? When I have a problem with a section or when something like this comes up, I like to "take a run at the pa...

Re: διηγησις - εν τη οδω

Here's something I wrote for a class sometime ago (originally in Latin, and then in Greek):

Re: Romans 1:20

Cool! I love the Buth stuff. Some of his associates were doing online classes for a while, which I participated in. Somebody would read a verse or two from one of the gospels, and the teacher would have a bunch of questions about the passage. The questions were posed in Koine and we were expected t...

Re: Romans 1:20

The general practice on BGreek is to discuss the Greek rather than translations. I know, I've been told something like this before. But I have a question for everybody, not just you. The Greek consists of more than just syntax. So is there any way we can talk about the semantics of Greek expression...

Re: Romans 1:20

in that the invisible things being perceived raises the question of how they can be perceived if they are invisible, and adding the word νοούμενα helps us to make sense of it by giving us a clue as to in what manner the invisible things are perceived. So what would you think about a translation tha...
