Re: Matthew 2 - a Discourse Analysis question

I have barely dipped my toes in the waters of discourse analysis. Last week, I was in an interactive Bible study at church, and we were discussing Matthew 2:1-12. The leader asked, "what is the main thing that this passage is about"? That struck me as a question that discourse analysis pe...

Re: Word order and emphasis in Acts 2:39

Returning to Acts 2:38-39, the clause initial ὑμῖν might also be understood as indicating ὑμῖν is the primary basis for relating the following sentence to its context (Levinsohn 2000:14). Acts 2:38 Πέτρος δὲ πρὸς αὐτούς· μετανοήσατε, [φησίν,] καὶ βαπτισθήτω ἕκαστος ὑμῶν ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματι Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ ...

Stephen,
Is this a feature of Koine or a reflection of the LXX in NT word order?

Re: New Dissertation on Koine Word Order (Allison Kirk, Leid

I spoke too soon. Reading past the first fifty pages, I find that this work is somewhat more eclectic than I previously thought. There seems to be a blend of late Chomsky and Functional concepts in the treatment of basic word order in the NT. I found a number of valuable insights in the second chapt...

Re: New Dissertation on Koine Word Order (Allison Kirk, Leid

Having read the dissertation, I'm not sure New Testament exegetes will be able to get much out of it. The theoretical approach of the thesis is firmly within the generative grammatical paradigm (think Chomsky) and much of the dissertation is spent solving particular problems generated by the theory...

Re: Word order and emphasis in Acts 2:39

Prototypically sentence information moves from most know to least known. This would mean that the info following the verb will tend to be more salient--the purpose of the utterance--than what precedes the verb ... Steve, I understand and appreciate your post. I am not quite as enamored with this fr...

Re: Word order and emphasis in Acts 2:39

A point of departure for Levinsohn (2000:8) is by definition clause initial. This is also true for Settings in Helma Dik (2007:38). In other words, this isn't a matter of observation. Yesterday I did some thinking about this. The point of departure serves to attach a new clause to the immediately p...

Re: Word order and emphasis in Acts 2:39

I now see that ὅταν clause in James 1:2 does not integrate Πᾶσαν χαρὰν ἡγήσασθε with precceding co-text. The ὅταν clause activates a scenario from the external context and might be considered in that sense a contextualizer. James 1:2 Πᾶσαν χαρὰν ἡγήσασθε, ἀδελφοί μου, ὅταν πειρασμοῖς περιπέσητε ποικ...

Re: Word order and emphasis in Acts 2:39

Stephen, that is generally true, both in Greek and across languages. However, Greek is something of a rare bird in this because it sometimes has things 'against the grain', that is, a Focal constituent will precede a 'frame of reference'. Maybe Steve R has a tagged text that can spit out a half doz...
