Re: Teaching meaning of middle voice

Valid point. So the teacher just needs a well grounded understanding of the middle.
Thanks! I'm not trying to teach Greek but in the future I hope to. Where can I learn more about the specifics and nuances of the middle?

Re: Teaching meaning of middle voice

Essentially the problem is here: it is best for Greek verbs to be translated very loosely and to show the student the facets of each tense voice and mood. So, a verb like ποιοῦμαι in some places may be translated "I do/make for myself" but in others "I am made". Maybe the solutio...

Re: Teaching meaning of middle voice

One method of teaching languages is to translate sentences over and over and practice by trial and error (the highly successful Duolingo uses this method). So, were this method combined with some explanations about the vowel compounding and some other things, this method might be good for Koine. Th...

Re: Poiein Indicative Paradigm

I will try to paste a page from the morphologia book that has two tables, ποιεῖν to be doing (active) and ποιεῖσθαι to be doing (middle). I will try to paste from a PDF in order to preserve formatting. . . . --that didn't work. So I'm trying a JPG, though unsure of the resolution in the final resul...

Re: Hellenistic Greek for the Modern World

I think the cause to raise Koine as a modern usable language won't ever work until there is a standardized full dictionary of everyday words, standardized pronunciation, and some people who are really REALLY good at Koine and can write let's say devotionals or newsletters in it. If there could be ma...

Re: Hellenistic Greek for the Modern World

So can anybody here have a full conversation in Koine about either doctrines or maybe everyday life (I think the first would probably be easier because of vocabulary)?

It is my dream to one day be able to debate in koine... not sure with whom... but it would be so awesome

Re: Poiein Indicative Paradigm

Thank y'all a lot. I'm having a little bit of trouble trying to understand these charts, but I'll try to work on it. Memorizing whole paradigms is not the road to fluency, although with fluency you will be able to generate the paradigm, at least as far as the language is internalized. Totally agreed...
