Re: Biblical words are nolonger referential?
get implicitly batched in with mid-20th century atheist apologists for a brief offhand comment I made on a podcast. I don't think being batched in with atheist apologists is an insult here. :) Doubting competency in linguistics is, which I did more or less implicitly or explicitly. My apologies for...

Re: Biblical words are nolonger referential?
I think the misunderstanding has something to do with age. Those of us who are old enough to be familiar with mid-20th century atheism hear the statement: Biblical words are nolonger referential and immediately think it equates with "Biblical stories are fairy tales." Never the less, the s...

Re: Biblical words are nolonger referential?
Been reading monographs on cognitive approaches to lexical semantics for two decades. Introduced to the field by Reinier de Blois The Semantic Dictionary of Biblical Hebrew. Never had any problem understanding referentiality. The frame approach to writing definitions (frame write-up in this study) e...

I don't either. He claims to be using a "cognitive" framework but says he does not want to get bogged down explaining it.Stephen Carlson wrote: ↑October 12th, 2021, 3:52 pm I try to up on the current terminology, but here I have no idea what he means.

Biblical words are nolonger referential?
Greek and Septuagint Lexicography with William Ross
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8U6EmdWNNY
9 mins into this Ross makes the breath taking claim that biblical words are "no longer referential."
That is a statement that certainly begs to be misunderstood.

Re: Middle vs. passive voice
Chrysostom in his commentary on 1Cor 11 employs a string of passives to describe the events and then sums up later using an active παρέδωκεν. Οὐχ ἁπλῶς οὐδὲ ἄνευ λόγου τινὸς, ἀλλ’ ἵνα μεθ’ ὑπερβολῆς κατανύξῃ καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ καιροῦ. Κἂν γὰρ αὐτόλιθος ᾖ τις, ἐννοήσας ἐκείνην τὴν νύκτα, πῶς ἦν μετὰ τῶν μαθ...

Re: Ways to begin working with the actual text as soon as possible
Not a bad plan. Couple elements I would add to your plan. Read the text out loud. Transcribe the text by hand. Look up all the words, don't skip the ones you don't know. In the last three decades students have had e-texts which link to lexicons. You can find these online for example the STEP bible.

Re: Justin Martyr Dialogue with Trypho 51.3
RE: αὐτὸς ὢν The string αὐτὸς ὢν is used more than once by Athanasius. During the centuries of christological controversies this kind of language appears frequently. Reading this back into Justin Martyr is a dubious procedure. Athanasius Orationes tres contra Arianos Volume 26, page 444, line 30 Ἄν...

Re: Hebrews 2:15
I have long thought that Hebrews 2:15 should be translated "to fear of death" instead of "through fear of death", to better coincide with Romans 8:15 ("slavery leading to fear again"). Heb. 2:15 καὶ ἀπαλλάξῃ τούτους, ὅσοι φόβῳ θανάτου διὰ παντὸς τοῦ ζῆν ἔνοχοι ἦσαν δου...
