Re: Relevance Theory and the Bible - a Few Resources

Post by Matthew Longhorn »

I have pulled all of the links into one to help categorise and hopefully make more useful. The categorisation leaves a lot to be desired in places, I tried my best to put it together sensibly. I have also flagged these to Dr Yus for his relevance theory bibliography https://personal.ua.es/francisco.yus/rt.html

There is a lot on here on translation theory and application, the other categories either deal explicitly with the Greek or the papers/chapters discuss it in light of relevance theory somewhere in their paper. I tried to not let much come through here that doesn't touch on Greek at all - I may have got carried away and missed things though. There is a lot more out there that I don't have access to at the moment without paying, so if others find stuff to add then please do post

I have asked Jonathan Robie to delete the other posts made here by me so that this post is at the top. Dr Carlson... yours got in the way of this reaching the top of the thread! :x I will try to reply to you later though

Following some discussion on a separate thread about how RT can be applied in exegesis, I checked with Jonathan Robie whether it is ok to add some more general resources here. These show how RT as a framework for understanding communication has been applied to Biblical texts outside of the area of Greek specifically. These would really fit in the Misc section above, as some of those resources are not as focussed on Greek as they should have been for me to include them
Here are some that may help people see how it can be applied (check also the “specific text” section above for resources that do have a focus on some Greek)

Hi Matthew,

If I wanted a 1 hour primer on Relevance Theory itself - not in a biblical context but generally, what its key insights and contributions are, its point/s of departure and so on, what would you recommend ?

thx
