Learning Koine Biblical Greek for a native French speaker

Post by Jody A. Rinas »

If French were my mother tongue, and English my second language in which I have decent fluency...
I am planning on going to seminary and need to learn Koine before I arrive. I would have someone to guide me via distance learning, but I am required to exercise some self-discipline and work through the content on my own over the course of a few months.
Can anyone suggest a textbook online or in print?
Yes, I could utilize some good online or print resources in English such as Funk or Croy or Mounce or M. Palmer's or Dr. Shirley's, etc. But French would be preferred as the main text. Any options?

I have a Lexique grec-français des mots usuels du Nouveau Testament, Delachaux et Niestlé, 1965 in my library.

I did a duckduckgo search on: maurice carrez lexique grec [without quotes]

The results included several online lexicons some of them PDFs you can download. I didn't look at everything but it probably would be worth exploring.

John Wenham The elements of New Testament Greek is available in a French translation. The revision of Wenham by Jeremy Duff has also been translating into French. I have the 1965 original in my library. It is a minimalist introduction, you'll need an intermediate level work. One drawback in the 1965 edition is the lack of accents. I would check on this in Duff. I didn't learn NT Greek using this book. The approach is traditional. I paid $1.99 for my used copy. I was worth it. You can't rely on this book to get you to reading the GNT so don't spend a lot of money on it.

Probably better to find something by a French author, Maurice Carrez has several works on this topic. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maurice_C ... A9ologien)

I think diglots are very helpful in learning to read. You are fortunate that there is a NT Greek French Diglot online.

D. Wallace's intermediate text book has been translated into French. I would avoid this work. It presents a frame of reference that is not only antiquated but will reinforce common misconceptions about how the language works. Not interested in debating this. Been discussed on this forum adnasueam.

Here is a French/English NT Greek bibliography. http://www.areopage.net/GrecBiblique_Grammaire.html
Note: Grammaire grecque du Nouveau Testament, Maurice Carrez is the first listed.

1933 PDF of Dom Bernard Botte (this is a digital image 3.7 mb).

Things are quiet here. Library is closed for several months. Tired of reading Greek Patristics; been reading John Meyendorff on Christology, got as far as Maximus the Confessor and gave up. For now anyway.

Also, communicative classes are taught primarily in Greek, so your native language is less of an issue.

Thanks, Stirling, for all the links. Much to explore and work with here.
I like the look of the Fr-Grk diglot. I have in hand a compact Diogenes Taschenbuch "Tetraglotton": Lat-Grk-Ger-Eng. I call it a quadglot.
Maybe Meyendorff & Maximus are not "thingstocatchuponduringquarantine"? (And maybe not the Wallace intermediate either.)

I neglected to mention the STEP bible which is available online for everyone. They have seven French translations which can be viewed along side with Hebrew and Greek hyperlinked to lexical and grammatical information. The STEP bible isn't as difficult to learn as some of the commercial products I have been using for thirty years.
