Best ways to donate / give away books

Post by Matthew Longhorn »

It isn't something that I intend to do any time soon, but I was wondering whether folks had thoughts on the best way to dispose of unwanted books on Greek if there were ever a need to (I have no plans to do this any time soon).

If it were one or two books, then giving to a local church or a charity shop would make sense. The fact that they are technical books does make me question whether they would be put to the best use. Where the collection is more extensive, donating to a library / seminary makes more sense, however this may not be appropriate where lots of underlining is present. Would you just phone someone at a possible institution to check?

Any thoughts? Possibly something more than one of us will have to consider at some point.

Theological Book Network will ship them to seminaries in the 2/3 world. That's what I do with books I no longer need/want.

Yes, I'd just phone or email the librarian. That's how offers of donated libraries used to come in at UST, Matt.

In general, specialist books are often best given to someone you meet who is interested in just that topic. It feels special that way.

I unfortunately don’t come across other people in the flesh who are interested in Greek to the extent that most of my books would be used. But yes, that would be ideal

I do tend to distribute unwanted books on theology to friends, Greek seems to be a tad niche in my circles unfortunately.

Any chance you can update the post title to have donate rather than denote? My iPhone seems to have done some sort of odd autocorrect there
