In Deuteronomy 12:5 lxx, what is the sense of ἐκλέξηται?

Post by Bill Ross »

Logeion parses this as an aorist middle subjunctive 3rd singular of ἐκλέγω:

What is that, (to my mind, convoluted) construction communicating?

Thanks.

"may choose" is an easy enough understanding.

Robertson on the aorist subjunctive (p. 848; 18.2.1c):

There is only relative time (future), and that is not due to the tense at all. The subjunctive is future in relation to the speaker, as is often true of the optative, though the optative standpoint is then more remote, a sort of future from the standpoint of the past.

Smyth on the subjunctive (Smyth grammar 4.44.111.123):

1859. The tenses of the moods except the indicative do not express time in independent sentences.
1860. Subjunctive - The subjunctive mood as such refers to the future. The tenses do not refer to differences of time, and denote only the stage of the action (continuance, simple occurrence, completion with permanent result).
