Best online Septuagint?

Post by Jonathan Robie »

What online texts or electronic texts of the Septuagint do you like best?

A PDF file of Rahlfs, not very convenient: http://ba.21.free.fr/septuaginta/cover.html
Of course, the most convenient of all is in a Biblical software passage; I have the LXX in Accordance, but it's there in other packages too. But they're commercial.
Free software: The Sword Project, with programs for Windows and for Mac
(http://www.crosswire.org/sword/software/index.jsp),
has the Rahlfs' morphologically tagged LXX at: http://www.crosswire.org/sword/modules/ ... odName=LXX
I think there are probably some others also.
οὔτοι ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς πάντα θεοὶ θνητοῖς ὑπέδειξαν,
ἀλλὰ χρόνῳ ζητέοντες ἐφευρίσκουσιν ἄμεινον. (Xenophanes, Fragment 16)

The best text of the LXX is the Göttingen, which is available electronically from Logos (http://www.logos.com/product/4951/gottingen-septuagint) or Accordance (http://www.accordancebible.com/store/de ... G+1+CD-ROM). The Logos version is affordable and complete but not morphologically tagged. The Accordance version is morphologically tagged but more expensive and not complete.

The Logos version does actually have a preliminary morph tagging. I think its currently something like 90-95% accurate and that'll be improving.

I stand corrected! The last update I had was from January, when Logos was coming up with a strategy for morphing the text. The accuracy is probably better than 99% already, if they took the approach we discussed back then.

A free favourite is http://www.codexsinaiticus.com (images and transcription).
And for analyzing usages, I like http://en.katabiblon.com/us/index.php?text=LXX (tagged text, concordance, "lexicon").

You know, I think you're right. Rick announced it in the forums, but I couldn't find where, but that sounds right--it was so little that Rick didn't think they needed more than one person working on it. I think Randal Tan is on the job.

The best list of Septuagint resources, including links to online texts is the website "The Septuagint Online" by Joel Kalvesmaki which can be found at http://www.kalvesmaki.com/Index.htm.

Make sure to check this site out.

When I view the LXX text on my Android phone, I find that sites which have the text with diacritics do not appear correctly, so you also want to be aware of some sites that give a non-accented version. One is available at the Unbound Bible (Biola University)http://unbound.biola.edu/.

I'll add others to this post as I find the ones which work on my cell phone.

This is not an online text, but my favourite electronic LXX text is the "Logos LXX", AKA "Septuagint with Logos Morphology" which (amazingly) has a reverse-interlinear to the Hebrew text (Andersen-Forbes)!
You can search the Greek and Hebrew morphology at the same time. The command is a little tricky, but it's quite powerful.

Want to know when a Hebrew imperative is translated by a Greek future? Try the following search, with "Bible" (not "Morph") as the search type:
([field bible, content] <af-morph+he ~ V??[iI]?????>) ANDEQUALS ([field bible, content] <lbs-morph+el ~ VF??????>)
It gives nominally 118 hits, most commonly in Isaiah, but there are some duplicates.

Want to know when the Hebrew פלשׁתי "Philistine" is translated by something other than ἀλλόφυλος? Try the following :
([field bible, content] <lemma = af/he/פלשׁתי>) NOTEQUALS ([field bible, content] <lemma = lbs/el/ἀλλόφυλος>)
Interesting patterns...

You might consider my material at
http://www.motorera.com/greek/greek.html
by clicking on a particular word, you are taken to a lexicon of it.
I am in the process of modifying it so that even hovering over a word will give its meaning. This feature is available for some of the NT already.
Cheers,
John Barach
