[Dickey] Group Progress

Post by EricSowell »

A group of us have decided to work through Eleanor Dickey's An Introduction to the Composition and Analysis of Greek Prose, which can be purchased online at Cambridge press or Amazon.

If you are interested and want to get started, or want to look at a sample before you jump in, the intro on accents and the first chapter is available online as a free PDF here (thanks for the link, Jason).

Threads - With the exception of the first section on accents, which we'll call Chapter 0, each chapter has "Preliminary Exercises", "Sentences", and "Analysis" (and there is a partial answer key at the back of the book for each of those). There could be a lot of back-and-forth on each, so we will either break each chapter up into it's own thread or we'll break each subsection ("Preliminary Exercises", "Sentences", and "Analysis") into its own thread. I'm thinking the latter might be best, but perhaps not until we have these organized in a subforum. We can always start this way and switch to another based on how things go.

Subforum - If this group continues (as it should!), we will put these threads into their own subforum. See the discussion in another thread about that.

Pace - I will kick off chapter 0 today. We'll plan on kicking off chapter 1 next week, and (based on the discussion on Twitter between a few of us) we'll shoot for two weeks per chapter. I've done chapters 0-3 and this will not be easy for most (including me), so we don't want to go too fast. We can also put in catchup weeks occasionally so those having difficulty can keep up. We will adjust pace as we go. This will not be a race, and there is no shame in having difficulty.

I'm not the boss of this. I'm just writing the first post. Please add your thoughts.

I tend to think the more subdivided the threads, actually the better. So yes, I'd like to see threads for each chapter as:
"general questions about the grammar raised", then "preliminary exercises", "sentences", and "prose analysis".

Once we see how this group will take off and have opened a subforum, we can use as many threads as we like for the actual work.

Any change we're gonna get more of a group working through this? I'm still expecting my copy of the textbook to arrive in the first week of August (fingers crossed), but so far we haven't worked past what is available for free online.

Has anyone looked at this who hasn't yet posted in the open threads?

I do plan to work on this, I don't plan on doing the accents chapter though. But I should be contributing to chapters 1 and onwards.

Thanks for jumping in Seumas. I was expecting at least one more to join. Perhaps he will.

We are officially starting chapter 1!

Cool. My hard copy of Smyth showed up today. There is a PDF if you want it, from Textkit but it's not searchable and I like to use minimal computer support when doing stuff like this.

Thx

Alrighty. Starting chapter 2! We can extend the next chapter to 3 weeks if people aren't caught up enough.
